A large-scale textile collage from the Batik: Recolouring Tradition series, made in collaboration with Indonesian and British artisans. Making this piece brought Lisa back to her late mother's homeland Indonesia, and to the cloth she spent her life collecting. The orchid pattern is Lisa's own, drawn and waxed using both batik tulis and batik cap, sitting alongside the traditional stamp designs of Yogyakarta, creating a dialogue between two studios, Indonesian and British. At the centre, a portrait of her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, silkscreened onto naturally dyed linen: a portrait of four generations of batik.

Unique work, Edition of 1.

Batik: Recolouring Tradition is an exhibition that retraces the steps of batik through a deeply personal and cross-cultural lens. Inspired by her late mother Farida King’s rich textile archive and Indonesian heritage, British textile artist and designer Lisa King embarks on a journey to deconstruct and re-examine this ancient technique for a contemporary world.
