A pair of hanging stamped batik cloths made in collaboration with Indonesian artisans.  The kemben or breastcloth is one of the traditional garments of Javanese dress, worn across the body in many layers of intricate pattern. This is Lisa's modern interpretation: stripped back to its simplest structure, retaining traditional stamps and motifs but allowing the cloth to breathe.

Edition of 3.

Batik tulis and synthetic dyes.

British plant dyes on silk and linen

60 x 71cm

Batik: Recolouring Tradition is an exhibition that retraces the steps of batik through a deeply personal and cross-cultural lens. Inspired by her late mother Farida King’s rich textile archive and Indonesian heritage, British textile artist and designer Lisa King embarks on a journey to deconstruct and re-examine this ancient technique for a contemporary world.
