A hand-drawn batik on pure silk, made by Lisa's in her East London studio in collaboration with British dye specialists. Verbascum the tall, wild mullein plant found across British fields and roadsides is juxtaposed with the Indonesian tradition of batik.. Its architectural silhouette, drawn in hot wax on silk, is dyed in yellow weld, marigold orange and red madder: two of Britain's oldest plant dye traditions. Tall and narrow, it is designed to hang like a vertical painting, the plant ascending the full length of the silk.

Batik: Recolouring Tradition is an exhibition that retraces the steps of batik through a deeply personal and cross-cultural lens. Inspired by her late mother Farida King’s rich textile archive and Indonesian heritage, British textile artist and designer Lisa King embarks on a journey to deconstruct and re-examine this ancient technique for a contemporary world.
